I am waiting for HD to come out with one of these for a sportster, I emailed HD about a month ago, they would not tell me if these are coming or not, If they dont come out with them this year I'll probably end up getting the dakota digital unit for the sportster.

No tach, NO problems ever. I always know what gear I'm in and when to shift. If I decide to get a little crazy, the rev limiter lets me know if I'm pushing it too far(that's what they are for). Obviously track bikes use them or shift indicators to shift at the absolute optimum time. Most of us on the street are not trying that hard. If you are, I don't want to ride with you!
BTW...I've been riding some sort of two wheeled motorized vehicle for 30+yrs. Maybe experience has something to do with it. Eyes are for watching the road, ears are for watching your bike.

Wow, strong feelings about tachs. Can't say that I need one, especially on a low rpm engine like a Harley, but I've broken a speedo cable a couple times, and the tach substituted till I could replace the cable. And a couple times, I've glanced at the tach, and realized I cruising a gear low for the speed. Never happened in 4 speed days, but with 5 and 6 speed transmissions, in cars too, it's easy to cruise 55 or 60 a gear low if you're a little distracted, or just tired. Wouldn't have added one to my bike, but doesn't bother me that it has one. Only thing in instruments I don't like is LCD number displays; have to actually read them, and they're hard to see in some light (does that say 40 or 90?).

I'm 24, have only 600 miles of riding experience, all on my '07 Nightster (first non dirt-bike) and have never once thought to myself, "man I wish I had a tach and a shift indicator so I know when to shift..." That has never crossed my mind. I'm usually thinking, "My engine sounds bad ***, that pretty girl is checkin me out, and this is a beautiful day for a ride!" Go buy a Goldwing 06Sporty so you can listen to your radio and do everything except live in the moment.
