I've kind of wondered the same thing before. I would like to buy pre 2003 1200. I can't find any locally. It's like all the older ones got traded and thrown in the ocean. 2004 and up is all I see.
I think it is a very good question, there are 2 metric bike boneyards within 50 miles of my house, but I don't know of any Harley boneyards. Maybe the answer is that Sportsters don't die. They get old and hibernate in a garage or barn until someone pulls it back out and rebuilds it.
I see plenty of older Sportsters for sale, especially in the late '80's and 1990's era up to 2003's. Quite a few Iron heads as well. Most were ridden hard and put away wet but some have been in good condition. Only problem is, the owners seem to think they have a "valuable" bike and want far more $$ than they're worth for what they are.
Mines an 02 it was stored away for about 2 years in a shed next to an old panhead they hadn't even started in for a year when I first looked at it beccause they lost the key but it might have died there if I didn't save it

That's how it is aroung here. lots of older Sportys for sale, but for the same money you can get a rubber mount.
