Nightster Winter Makeover
#241
Ok, so I haven't been able to get to the shop in the last several days, but my son-in-law couldn't resist the temptation to get his hands dirty (I think he's almost as excited about this project as I am, much to his wife's/my daughter's consternation). We've been talking about the tank lately and how and where to mount it. We both loved mreed's idea of keeping the tank low instead of raising it up, but either way the stock tank mounts had to come off. So last night (allegedly sometime after 3am) he did the deed. Here are some pics of the tank without the mounts.
The rear mount is a solid piece that runs almost the entire length of the tank.
We haven't made a final decision on the mounting points...I haven't had a chance to discuss it in detail or face-to-face with him yet. I think we're going to modify the rear mount so the *** end sits lower on the frame and due to the increased rake of the steering head it will have to be shortened so the tank can sit back a bit. We also have to make accomodation for the tang on the stock seat (which slides under the rear tank mount) so that it can be mounted as normal for two up riding.
One of these days I'll get some time back in the shop. Frustrating...

Busy at home, busy at work. So far 2012 has allowed me very few hours in the shop. I'm starting to get worried that I'm not gonna be anywhere near complete by the time the weather breaks. That's really gonna **** me off...
But, I managed two hours today, which was just enough time to lay out the wiring harness and identify and mark all the wires, save one. There's a single wire with a long thin rubber boot at the front of the harness that terminates near the voltage regulator and I can't remember where that goes. I'll figure it out eventually. Other than that I got everything ID'd and labeled with blue masking tape. And I know some of you are saying to yourself..."Why the hell didn't he lable every wire and connector as he was disassembling it?" And that would be a very good question. I live and learn. Wasn't too hard to figure everything out though. Most, if not all of the connectors are unique, and I had marked some of them with some smallish ID marks. I just had to take my time and match them up.
As always, here are some pics.
The unidentified wire is the one hanging between the front wheel and the frame, if anyone knows off the top of their head?
Next step will be to start tearing the harness apart and determine where each one will go. Still planning on an internal run for most of the wires, but we'll see how it goes. I know it's not much progress. Hopefully, time will free itself up in the coming weeks and I'll have more to report.

Im a little confused. I got a set of Wilwood rotors, front and back are 11.5". The specs said it fit 2000 and up sportsters. Problem is my rear is 10.25". I looked up the specs on the nightster and it seems to be the same. I was wondering how you did it then I looked closer at your pic. You have the caliper but I dont see a rotor..........what gives?
