My Sporty was an 883. I bought it new. I put 65,000 miles on it, and rode in into 15 different states, before I decided to put a larger engine in the bike. And that was mostly because I was going to have to pull off the jugs to replace the lower gaskets. Figured if I was going to take the engine apart...may as well put it back with some more power.

The 883 will serve you well.

Ha I just spent a couple of days discussing that with someone else who was very helpful. The short answer is no. Our bikes, along with 2007+, have Electronic Fuel Injection Systems (or EFI, an acronym you'll see a lot) that adjust to changes in the bikes' intake/exhaust system. That being said, without a tune you will not get MAXIMUM performance out of your bike and you'll even lose some performance from some pipes after your bike makes the adjustments (open pipes, drag pipes, etc...). There are also several "types" of of tunes: from downloadable tunes for aftermarket tuners to full dyno testing. There are PLENTY of threads on here that can go through the various details of tuning and the price ranges of each, which you should go through if you're interested. I do not want to spend my time here explaining it for everyone. I've decided to avoid those because buying a good full exhaust + dyno tune ends up being close to $2000 (at least at my dealership.) Slip-ons (the route I've decided to pursue) are designed to work with our OEM head pipes and are designed to work with the factory tune of the bike. We can get about 5hp from slip-ons (based off of various manufacturer specs). The three that I keep hearing about are the V&H Slip-ons, the Rush Slip-ons, and the Cycle Shack slip-ons. I've picked the Cycle Shack Slip-ons ($154 on eBay and +5hp) because I keep hearing that they're the loudest and I want cars to know I'm on the road. I call it "audible visibility" and apparently Cycle Shack is the best for that. If you want to continue this back-and-forth I'd be more than happy to but we should take it to PM.
