I test rode the 48, but I did not like the forward controls. Has anyone had the dealer put mid controls on a new 48? I know I can get the Nightster, but I prefer the 48.
There are Irons around here wearing the tiny peanuts and Nightsters with Forty Eight seats because Forty Eight owners did not like the tank/seat. I am sure they can do it for you, it will mean that they could mark the price of a Nightster or Iron up slightly because they installed "forwards" so I don't see why they wouldn't.
Buy the bike w/ forwards. Take them off and sell them for $300+ on ebay and buy mids for under $100 to profit. Mids kick ***. IMO, forwards are stupid no matter what seat, bar combo you have.

Perhaps I should have asked if this is a mechanically sound thing to do on a 48. Yes, I'm a noob. But, it sounds like the answer is "yes".
As a new rider, I've taken the advice to find what actually fits. At 5'8" and shorter legs, the mids on the Nightster and Iron fit much better for me. I just don't care for the grey of the Nightster.
Give the forward controls a chance, they might grow on you. Regardless of what some say, most people buy the Forty Eight because of the peanut tank, solo seat and forward controls. That is what makes a Forty Eight a Forty Eight.
A set of used/take off mids should run you about 50 bucks. Be mindful, on some bikes they're polished (pictured) and others they're black. A set should include the peg to frame mounts, shifter, brake pedal with linkage, brake pedal stand-off and hardware. You may find you like the forwards better. Personally, I hate mids - always bangin' my sheens and catching my pants' hem.
