Capacitance? A coil will have inductance and resistance, not capacitance. Using a multimeter to test a coil is useless. Only dead shorts will show in a coil. As you know there is high voltage running through the coil and the multimeter measures resistance with a very low voltage. The short could be occuring only when high voltage is running through the coil, therefore a ring test is appropriate for a coil. If you can't ring test and suspect the coil, replace it the coil anyways.

if you have a capacitor also (should have said this initially) you can test a coil using a cap and a multi-meter that has the cap function on it, you have to set it up in a certain fashion, i should have been a little more specific but didn't imagine slyder has a high end fluke meter basically a fluke w/ the o'scope built into it. I am very aware that coils create high voltage and rely on the principles of inductance and resistance. IF you have a cap w/in the required power spectum for the application you can recreate a more advance ignition system and test the product of the coil through the capacitance droop and see if the coil is actually producing the required hi voltage under load.......... yep, basically. you could also pull the plugs and test a wire from the spark tooth to ground and you would literally have the "load" in circuit but this might be difficult to pull of w/out the right set up. get your buddy to hold the plug and wires.....haha!

yeah its got the stock ignition in it. Previous owner did all the mods. My wife picked it up on ebay without me knowing. She called me at work and told me she bought her own bike. Paid $4000 for it. The owner put more than that in the motor. Runs like a raped ape when its running good. She basically bought the motor cause all the chrome is trashed from salt air. So I have a winter project anyhow. She wants it painted and all the chrome redone. Also wants the frame painted to match. That should just about take care of all her christmas and birthday presents for the next 10 years.
