That's the smallest HD he can get--is he buying it because that's what he wants or because it's the only one he can afford? I'm sure there are exceptions, but I know several guys who bought 883's because they are cheap and plentiful, and every one of them got rid of them in less than a year.

There's an old saying: "Sportsters are easy to buy and hard to sell". And to top it off, I'm not sure that's a great price on a 6 year old sporty.

i would recommend going to the HD dealership by you....im not sure if they still have any, but they are are selling 2006 brand new models for 6000....i know thats a little bit more than what you are looking to spend, but for the 883 you can get a new with no milage and/or wear on it........but if you insist on going used go for the 1200 ...you can prob find one around the sme price with less milage....i bought the 883 used for 6000.....only had like 6300 miles on it...but it was hooked up so i had too buy it and now i want to do engine conversion

My wifes 883 standard was $4000 with 14k on the clock. It's an 02 so depending on where you live and the condition it may be reasonable.I looked for a long time but made the purchase during riding season.I was going to buy her a new one earlier this week and she said no.They don't have the color she wants. She wants hers painted instead.Hers is black, color was about an extra $400 back then so if the bike isn't black that could affect the price. Now there is a huge surplus price wise,if he can wait a month or so he may be better off.The prices are going to plummet in my opinion.
