Default '87 883 sportster rear chain

I have an '87 883 Sportster, no matter how many times I check and adjust my rear chain it always gets loose when I ride. I bought new rear chain adjusters through drag specialties and it still gets loose. Can anyone give me any suggestions to what might be my problem? Thanks.

If the axle isn't sliding forward in the swingarm (mark or measure it), then I'd say the chain is stretching and needs replaced. Are you sure of year and model as if I'm not mistaken, 86-87's were 1100s and the Sportster Evo came out in '88.

The Evo came out in '86 in two sizes - 883 and 1100. The 1100 was enlarged to 1200 in '88.

If you're adjusting the chain too tight, it will stretch pretty fast. Or, if it's old and worn out (and/or the sprockets are really worn), it will stretch quickly. Another possibility is it's a cheap chain - they stretch much more quickly than a good one.

My guess is the sprockets and chain are worn. Have you replaced any of them? If you are not sure, call by an indy and ask him to take a look for you. There is no substitute for seeing the bike in the metal!

Im positive of the year. I adjust the chain to spec per service manual every time, so I know it cant be from being to tight. I believe the sprockets are original so I'm sure the teeth are pretty worn but none look to bad. The chain is only a little over a year old but it has sat in weather a couple times.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions fellas.
