OK, so you said you wanted the route tips to keep coming. Here is a scenic VA way to get to the head of Skyline Drive in Front Royal.

You didn't say where you were coming from in PA, but from the Gettysburg area, take Route 15 south through Frederick Maryland, crossing into Va at Point of Rocks. Stay on 15 until you hit US 50 at a traffic circle at "Gilbert's Corner." Take 50 West through Aldie and Middleburg. (There is a good biker friendly outdoor cafe in Middleburg if you're there at lunch time.) Stay on 50 West through Upperville and turn left on US17 South at a stoplight just after the road widens to 4 lanes. About 2 miles south of 50 on 17 turn right on Leeds Manor Rd. (Co. 688) (There is a sign for the Naked Mountain Winery.) Stay on 688 (a beautiful Va byway) until you cross I-66 and then turn right on 55, The John Marshall highway. 55 will take you through Linden and into Front Royal. You'll hit 340 less than a mile north of where Skyline Drive starts.

That is my favorite way to get out to Skyline Drive. I just rode all of 688 (past 55 and into Warrenton) on Sunday. It's a beautiful ride.

The only one that I've ever used that didn't suck was the Dyson Airblade, they had them in the bathroom at this fancy hotel in Chicago.

However, the downside is they made a noise about equal to a Blackhawk helicopter turbine spinning up....good lord I thought the bathroom was about to perform a vertical take off.

211 is an awesome ride, and if you go all the way into New Market you can hit the Battlfield Museum there as well as a bit south is the longest covered bridge in the country and Shenandoah Caverns, much prettier than Luray caverns and a bit less expensive as well. If you as at Shenandoah Caverns where the Covered Bridge is they will direct you. I went to high school right across the street (sort of) from the caverns

My folks live on 688. Definitely a great riding road. There are plenty in the area, that's for sure. Rather than turning right on 55, stay on 688 all the way through to 211 and then head west up to Skyline Drive. The general store in Orlean is a great lunch stop. My buddy Ted is the owner.

I posted a thread telling about our 2500 mile trip this summer on an 883 custom. Mustang seat but we have driven on the stock seat before that. Just stop often to stretch. Anyway my suggestion is a spare ignition key, just in case. Have fun. we have a great time on our sporty.

Yeah, I like the part of 688 below I-66 too, but I thought if the OP wants to do all of Skyline Dr, better to start at the north end and go all the way down.

Thanks for the tip on the General Store in Orlean. I have been through there a few times and it caught my eye, but I didn't recognize it as a lunch place. I'll be certain to stop next time.
