Default No rear turn signals?

I just got the fork seals replaced in my bike. Now its time to let the modding begin.

First: I am replacing the rear fender with a chopped ABS fender which requires me to relocate the rear license plate and light. I got the kit from Road 6 customs. As I was installing it, I noticed that my rear turn signals are gonna "stick-out" too far for my liking.

I run inside to jump on the net to get some ideas about how to relocate/modify/replace those rear turn signals, and I see a lot of guys dont have any at all!

Is this normal? I like the sleek look of not having them, but I have to imagine this is very unsafe and possibly not legal! I have only been in this sport a month.

What is the reasoning behind no rear signals?

I don't have any, front or rear on my bike. I like the look without them, but the real reason I removed them is the module went bad and it was 140.00 to replace it.

I dont feel comfortable riding around without them. I am gonna attempt to modify the rear mounting brackets and re-use the originals.

I couldn't find any that I really liked. I just dont like how far the original ones "stick-out".
