Default 1984 sporty ironhead primary cover

I recently removed the primary cover on my wifes 1984 sporty 1000 to polish it.Now i am hav'in problems getting the cover back on.It feels like it's hitting something ,but i can't find anything!Also what is good way to clean these Aluminum covers,and casings??

Your primary chain shoe adjuster is mounted on a stud that protrudes from the crankcase. Spring pressure holds the adjuster down While installing the cover it is required that you push this adjuster up to install the cover.
