Progressive models...

hey Progressive, thanks for chiming in...
I am 180lbs and my wife is a feather. I am looking to keep stock height.
so the 412 is my basic upgrade. I feel like that is what I am looking for, but I could entertain the cost of going for the better goodies. What results should the 440s provide me? just a better all around performance(damp, travel, etc)
and pardon my ignorance...... how do they adjust if it does not need a tool?

Your budget may be the deciding factor here.
A 12" 412 will provide you with a pretty significant improvement in ride quality, the higher quality damper and additional travel really make the difference.
Another option, although more expensive would be the 430 Series. Using a monotube design and deflective disc damping the 430 is a big step up in damping control (the better a shock controls damping, the better your bike will ride). The threaded preload adjuster also allows for a much finer tuning of preload (and therefore sag).
Both will improve the ride of the bike!

Chamba, the collar at the top turns to adjust the pre-load. It has about six dents around its periphery, I put a spot of black paint on the dents that were directly inboard when at zero pre-load. The collar is fairly easy to turn but never moves on its own. I suppose you could say that the 440s are infinitely adjustable fromzero to max.
that helps me out! So are the 412s NOT infinitely adjustable? I guess it doesn't matter as long as I like the ride B/C my wife weighs 100 lbs. Would you recommend one or the other?
and thanks for the pic. what seat is that???? looks comfy.

The 440s have the ability to eliminate squatting on hard acceleration and it takes very little pressure on the seat to move rear shocks, I think they call that low stiction. That seat is a Harley Sundowner that has been on there since the bike had 7 miles on it. Very comfy. If you can do the money do the 440s. A little side mention here would be that with the 13.5" shocks the top muffler sometimes rattles against the lower shock bolt when the bike is unladen and idling. 13" would eliminate that although its not a real worry.

Too many options, huh? We can simplify.
Toss the 418 out, (we no longer make them) and the 812 is a 412 with covers on it.
That narrows it down to 412 (good), 430 (better) 440 (best).
What really matters is what kind of riding you do, how much you (and potentially passenger) weigh and if you intend to go with stock or lowered height.
