1/4" 6061 Aluminum 3" Long, 1.5" width, bent 30deg at 1" mark, drilled to center on the .5" x .75" on each side. Then sanded smooth, square, and polished.

About $2 worth of metal.

Note: if you haven't looked in the headlight - that's where lots of the harness is hiding. Much of it can be hidden under the tank and with some loom. Probably the best mod you can do.

I used the same stuff for the seat mount - I used the original seat tounge as a flange to hold 2x pieces as a clamp and extend the seat pivot forward. Most the solo seat kits tend to keep the seat too far back in my opinion. Moving it forward help the tank transition into the seat without much of a gap.

I'd like to do my wheels this winter & had a couple questions;
what prep did you do?,
what paint did you use?
did you use masking tape for the non painted area?

 

Do it now, not really a winter project - very easy, and only a few hours of work (mostly waiting).

I powered washed the wheels and tires with degreaser (keep the bearings covered). Scrubbed with some SOS pads and taped off the side walls off.

The first go I tried VHT wrinkle...didn't wrinkle well. The second go, I used basic primer (duplicolor), a satin black paint, and then Dupli-color wheel coating (http://duplicolor.com/products/wheelCoating/) [all found at NAPA].

Once dry, but still soft - used a straight razor and scraped the paint off...saved about 2-hours of taping [learned with the first try].

Powder coat is still the best option here - should give a durable finish if done correctly, and shouldn't' have to worry about respraying when you have new tires put on. It is likely that this will come right off when put on the tire machine....but for time and money - I like paint and don't mind retouching if required.

Thanks, the original design with to do a satin black rear fender with a solid gold flake tank... Not as easy as the pro's make it sound.

The color was a last minute decision - while trying to incorporate the flat look with some gold. It looks better in person, the camera (phone) doesn't do a great job capturing it. I will take some pictures with a real camera once the badges are back on.

She is very happy with it...or maybe she's just happy to have it back after a few weeks of downtime.
