Default Rear Shocks

New Sportster Rider. Bringing the bike in for 1,000 mile service. I'm 170 lbs, and wife is 120 lbs. When I ride myself no issues with bumps, but with both of us, we tend to bottom out. Since most of the riding is done by myself, I want to make an adjustment but not effect my ride to much. What kind of setting should I suggest for the both of us on the bike.

At the bottom of the shock spring is a Spring Adjusting Cam. It requires using a spanner wrench to rotate it in either direction. Lower numbers indicate lower preload amounts for lighter riders or a softer ride, higher numbers indicate higher preload amounts for multiple riders or firmer ride.

It sounds like you're having the dealer make the adjustment...if that's the case and you want to keep the stock shocks I would suggest talking to one of the service guys about it and have them show you how to adjust the preload so you can just switch it when your wife rides.

Also, quite a few of us have thrown air shocks on. It makes it very easy to just pump it up when you want to throw the wife on and it's a much better ride for the both of you. There's a few others like Progressive 412s or 440s that people like to switch to as well.

Just set it to the hardest. It will still be too soft and bottom out riding over a bumb.

Mines set on the stiffest position and I weigh 210 and the wife about 160 and I have no issues with it bottoming out.

We're about the same weight. If I had the $$ I would put the progressive shocks on. The factory shocks are a joke!

What is the swap most people do with the Super Glide shocks? They are an easy swap I believe. Are those adjustable as well? If they are how do you adjust them? I was thinking of doing that swap.

The stock superglide shocks for a 2010 are 12 inch and have a 5 point adjustment (spanner wrench)... They are junk!
