Default Upcoming 1st time rider. Iron?

Hi there,

A few of the boys have came up with a plan, not to wait for our midlife crisis, and go ahead and get a few bikes and go cruising.

So I have been looking at bikes over the last few days. I like very clean looks, and very little to no chrome. I really like the look of the Iron. Only other bike that really strikes me (in 2012 paint), is the V-Rod Night Rod Special, but thats a lot more bike then I need, and more then Id like to spend to be honest. I like flat black, or complete white out, so the 883 comes pretty close, and has that simple clean look I like.

How do you like your Iron 883? I have also noticed the good boost in performance to go with a 1200 conversion kit. Is there anything else that needs to be done to the bike to handle the extra power (clutching etc?)

I come from the ATV world, and have never had a motor cycle. Dont know much about them yet. Years ago I would have bought a crotch rocket, but with a few kids, and a little older, I think a HD is more along the lines now.

Any other bikes to be considering over the iron? I would be looking at new and used.

Good bike man. I wanted an iron for my first bike, but went with a little 250vtwin for about 6mo and got comphy. Paid like $2k for it. Once I got feeling ok with riding and some practice i went and looked for the yellow/blk iron but hard to find.
then seen the 48.

The 883 is a great bike but for starting out, maybe.. i didn't' want to pay a real bill to practice with. I'm sure many do though

Yeah, I might pick up something this fall to ride on. Maybe dual purpose or something.

Also considering a stryker. I know its not a H-D, but it doesnt look to bad either. And its quiet a bit lighter, which isnt a bad thing, as Im 6'0" and 165lbs. Pretty much a bone rack lol. Any opinions on this machine?

Welcome to the forum from NW Mississippi!

An 883 is a great bike. There is so much you can do with it.

I would recommend picking out a few bikes that appeal to you visually, and that are in your price range...then give each of them a test ride to see which one you are most comfortable on.

Kevin

Well I will certainly taking some machines for test drives. Budget really isnt an issue, but I dont want to swander money either. I just like the price point that the Iron comes in at, and its style. Ill have to get out in the next few weeks to ride a few bikes.

If you like the Vrod, you can pick up a used one with low miles priced very good.

The Iron is not a bad bike and I live the looks of it, but the Nighters might be a better way to go as you will want the power of the 1200 anyways real soon. Used nighters can be found for a good price if you just keep looking.

I've been riding an iron since 2009. I ride daily except during December - February.

I make mostly 20-40 mile trips, but with at least one 400 mile trip a year. The iron is not comfortable for 400 miles, but it is doable. Hell, real men do that on rigids all the time.

I do not feel like I am missing out on more power.
I love that I get 50 mpg average

I am 38, 5'11", and I weight 176 lbs, if that helps you any.

When I turn 40, I will probably buy a Triumph Speedmaster and put some bags on it, unless HD comes out with something new and different. But I will keep my iron, as it is a great bike to commute on and dart quickly through traffic.

the most common comment I get is "Nice bike! Wait, that's a harley? Really? it doesn't look like a harley."
