bud,

If it ain't in the manual under OK oils for extremely hot engines don't do it.

SAE oil ain't good enough, you need CF-G-H-I 4 20-50 or better, its the life blood man don't screw with it.

A quick Google search gets this - but you'd still need to check the bottle to see if it carries the diesel CF or better rating (I don't think it does).

NAPA's Oil is packaged for them by Valvoline.

Too bad you weren't tuned in last month. NAPA had Mobil-1 15w-50 on sale for $4.99/qt.

At $4.99/qt, I picked up 4 cases, (24 quarts). I figured that should keep me set until they put it on sale again next summer.

NAPA could not answer my question so i contacted Valvoline. Here is their response.
QUOTE: Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, the Napa Synthetic 15w50 does not carry the 1994 API Diesel engine oil rating CF or higher. This oil is rated API SM for late model Gasoline engines. Valvoline recommends the use of our SynPower 20w50 or our Synthetic 4 Stroke Motor Cycle Oil 20w50 for your Harley Davidson Sportster.

Whatta ya bet the NAPA oil is basically SynPower in 15W50 weight. Notice the Valvoline response recommended their oil over NAPA. I'm guessing the profit per quart is higher retailing Valvoline branded oil than selling NAPA labeled oil to NAPA at wholesale price.

I would suggest not trying to save 3-4 bucks a can when you could spend a few thousand rebuilding an engine. These air cooled motors run hot and need an oil that won't break down, that's why they recommend a high end diesel synthetic or dino oil. I would go with at least CG myself.
