883-1200 Conversion w/ SE/AC, Rejet & V&H Straightshot Slipons. Conversion obvious ? LOL. Man, does it ever roar out of the hole ?

Sounds like fun.

The gear ratio of the 883 coupled with the power of the 1200 will give you a better hole shot than a stock 1200.

olesalt - I think I remember you did the conversion yourself - how did it go? I'm considering doing the conversion myself over the winter and looking for encouragement or discouragement.

Hey Douge_2000,

I thought it went relatively easy. I'll ran into a problem or two like I had to cut the carb backing plate off to get the breather screws broke loose with a pipe wrench. Needless to say that destroyed the screws. The SE A/C kit had it's own backing plate so it was an easy fix. Before you start, you'll need: HD Service Manual for your bike. This is a must do. A good SAE socket set with deepwells, Torx bits set up to 50 that fits your socket drive ..you'll need up to 45 for the conversion but a lot of the Sporty fasteners are 50 . You'll need a 16 point 1/2" socket and a breaker bar ( I used a piece of pipe) to break the head bolts loose. Also a torque wrench up to at least 35 ft/lbs The conversion I bought was at EBay $426. A top end HD gasket set $90. Don't try to reuse gaskets..replace all you open up. Small tubes of assembly lube & Loctite Blue. New Allen wrench set and I also bought a 3/8 drive allen set. I took a week on & off but could have done it in a long day or two regular days. I took my time primarily so I wouldn't miss something. If you're going to rejet for the 1200cc replace those carb screws with socket cap screws.
Hey, it was a hoot. The neighbors have mixed feelings about the V&H pipes. Follow the manual and the directions that come with the conversion kit and it'll go sweet.

Thanks for the info!

I've got everything you mentioned that I'll need except the conversion kit and the 16pt socket. As I read more, I'm getting comfortable with doing it myself. I've learned that I like working on the scoot - did all the stuff in my sig myself. Did a lot of engine work on British cars in a former life. Plus I figure I've got the forum as a backup.

BTW - what should I tell my wife I'm doing? It was a chore talking her into the Harley. She doesn't ride anymore and I'm sure she's going to ask why my new bike is in pieces in the garage.

Theres a lot of info on the Sportster Pages http://www.sportster.org/tech/evo-tech/heads.shtml or Nighrider.com

http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/x...200_page00.htm. Unfortunatly I can't help you with your bride. My kit and V&H pipes were an early Christmas present.
