Arrow Deciphering the Fuel Pak Project

Deciphering the Fuel Pak Project

Anyone will tell you that the worst part about owning a Fuel Pak is the lack of end user adjustments. Even after getting 'dialed in' blindly by phone or email, many of us believe that there could still be room for improvement. The problem is, inherently it's very difficult to translate the feel of minor changes through a conversation on the phone.

The intent here is not to create a database for making bold adjustments to completely circumvent Vance and Hines tech support, but rather to gain an understanding of the values in order to fine tune these baselines.

Collectively we should be able to build a record of what each mode controls. Here's what I propose: those of you with a Fuel Pak please chime in with your experience in tuning of the product. I have already put together some information which I have gathered from various forums, so that will be the starting point. If you have any additional info/corrections please include that as well.

Example post:
"I had an off idle stumble, so the tech had me increase the values in mode 1 and mode 2 by 3, which resolved the problem."
This is ideal because it indicates tuning issue, modes affected, amount of change, and the result.

Example description:
"1. idle fuel, throttle lag (-), off idle stumble (+)."
This translates to Mode 1 controls idle fuel. If you are having throttle lag/hesitation decrease this value. If you are have an off idle stumble then increase this value.

Mode Descriptions
1. idle fuel, throttle lag (-), off idle stumble (+)
2. idle fuel, throttle lag (-), off idle stumble (+)
3. idle fuel
4. idle fuel
5. <1/4 throttle fuel, throttle lag (-)
6. 1/4 --> 1/2 throttle
7.
8.
9.
10. cruise speed fuel 50mph 1/4 --> 1/2 throttle, highway stumble (+)
11. cruise speed fuel 60mph
12. cruise speed fuel 70mph
13.
14.
15.
16.
17. idle a/f ratio
18.
19. throttle cal
20. version
21. throttle cal test
22.
23. fuel cut/injector shunt at 0 throttle, decel popping (-), stalling (+)

Please note, I am not responsible for any damages that may occur for running values not recommended or suggested by Vance and Hines. Thank you all in advance for your input.

I had a stage-1 done on mine and thought I'd see what the pak could do on top of it. Unfortunately, V/H didn't have any values for a stage-1. Since I live relatively close to V/H, I offered to loan my bike to them to dyno so they could register some numbers.

Once I got it back, it ran great...for a while until the decel popping began to increase. They told me it was the "nature of the beast" being as it is such a short pipe.

After talking to a few on this forum, it was suggested I try to reduce mode 23 from value 22 to 19. It seemed to help the decel a bit...for a while. After a while of dealing with the continued popping I lowered it again to 18. Still pops a bit.

Moral: Mode 23 from 22 to 18 helps decel popping, but does not stop it.

I took mode 23 UP to 33 and it got rid of the popping... V.H. said to keep going down from base number 22, Just don't go below 17 or stalling issues could arrive. Well the popping just kept getting worse ..So I started going up and @33 now and after its warmed up THERE ARE GONE

I'll put it into perspective for you:

EFI is great IF you have the right tool. I imagine you wouldn't love your carburetor if the only tool you had to adjust it was a potato with a paper clip sticking out of it. You love your carburetor because you have complete control over it, there are tools that give you that with EFI as well, it's just that the fuelpak isn't one of them.

What was your reason for calling them? Problems or certain issues or just MPG .
