Tire Wear

Tire Wear
Guys,
I have about 7,000 miles on my tires and I noticed the rear tire tred is getting thinner right in the middle of the tire. However the edges and sides have a lot of tread. My question is do you guys run the tires down until there is nothing left in the middle or do you replace them when the tred wear indicators start to show. I still have plenty of tred left for the hard corners. I never ride in the rain(almost never rains in NorthTX) so I am not worried about water chaneling. Any comments?

That depends on where you live.In Pa you would fail state inspection.I personally would replace the tires. On a bike the tires are your connection to being alive or being dead. It's your choice though I'm not your Mommy. It has been said that tires stop the vehicle brakes only stop the wheel from turning. That statement is from auto engineers.

RE: Tire Wear
In my opinion spending $100 for a rear tire every 8 to 10 thousand miles is a small price to pay for your safety.
The center of the tire is going to wear quicker, as the tire has a curved radius to it, and it's not flat like on a car/truck where the entire width of the tire makes contact with the road.
Probably 90% of the time you would be riding on the 'worn' center portion of the tire, so I would be more concerned about the tread depth at the center of the tire, not the depth on the sides.

Thanks. I am thinking about adding a second bike to the stable next year. This will reduce the amount of miles next season on the sporty(and tires). Now, I just have to convince the wife that spending $18.5K is a good idea to keep me from spending the $100 for the new tire.

When I bought my new Sporty back in Aug .. the dealer had a maintenance plan that included tires and rims for 6 years unlimited miles. I jumped on that plan specifically because of the tire / rim coverage. I use the bike mostly to commute; an 80 mile roung trip. Riding lets say 3 days a week puts me at ~13k a year. But, that is just to and from work. I do frequently hop on and go for a "joy" ride. So I would probably need at least a single set of tires per year, maybe two sets.
So what Im getting at, check if a similar plan is available from your dealer when/if Moma agrees to the addition. Tires and Rims coupled with prepaid maintenace isnt a bad deal.
