Sorry this is a bit late.

Top bolt is 1/2-13 x 2-1/4"
Bottom bolt is 1/2-20 x 2-1/2" with locknut.

Hello old chap, you can answer queries like that right here. That will give you the correct part numbers and the descriptions give you the sizes of those screws. Not sure why you need new ones, they are reusable!

I'm not the OP but FWIW I need an upper shock bolt myself, the frame threading was not done well plus someone applied red Loctite at some point, same deal on the bolts that hold the crashbar on (already fixed them)...so I need to clean up the threads with a tap and install new hardware.
Anyway from my notes the HD part # for the upper bolt is 3880 and they cost about $4, head is T50 Torx.

Gents, i know this is an old thread, but I’m tuning in for similar advice. I’ve had an issue where my right side rear bottom shock bolt was too long to fit properly, was within .0001” of contacting the pulley bolts. I backed it out using a wrench, however now it has a lot of play between the shock absorber eye loop. I do not know all of the bikes history due to it being owned from 3 other people previously. I took I measurements of the bolts, and sure enough, left side bolt is 2.5” and this right side bolt is a hair shy of 2.7”. My question is, is this a standard size difference between them, or did some body install the incorrect hardware?

My thoughts would be to swap the bolts, the left side wouldn’t matter quite as much since the tip of that bolt wont be close to touching anything, and the 2.5” bolt would correctly.

Any input would be great, thanks!

Put the right side bolt on the other side, that should give you clearance. Unless it's close on the left side too. You can look up the bolt part number on Ronnie's Microfiche and it should tell you the correct length. That way you know for sure what is correct.

I forget what year your bike is, but for 2003 Harley shows a part number for the left and another for the right. Maybe yours are just mixed up. Left P/N 3958, Right P/N 4743. Make sure you torque them to 50 lbs/ft IIRC.

If the machine is a 2003 Sportster, John is correct with the above part numbers.

3958 is 1/2-20 x 2-1/4" long. It is the left hand bolt.
4743 is 1/2-20 x 2-3/8" long, It is the right hand bolt.

Both are bolts Grade 5.

It does help us greatly if the production year and exact model are quoted when asking a question.

That's odd. I thought the right side bolt was the one he had a problem with, and Harley says it's the longer one? Neither size explains his 2.7" bolt, so off to the dealer or Ace Hardware.

OK, John, here is a screen shot of the 2003 Sportster parts list to confirm the left and right shock bolts.

If he's got a 2.7" bolt, someone put on a replacement that is too long
