I really do like the buells, all of them but especially the ulysses. I do nearly all the work on my bikes myself but it would still be tough for me to buy a bike whos manufacturer is out of business. That being said when HD closed them down the moco did promise to continue providing parts for them so who knows. I think I'd be happy with one but would like a little more of a dirt worthy bike. I loved the red one with bags. I set on one at the closest buell dealer and it felt great. Even came with heated grips and a 12v outlet. All for ~$12000 I think.
As far as weight goes there is a plethora of adventure bikes in the 500lb range. I wouldn't expect it to shred single track but I know it could handle rough dirt roads and the occasional atv trail. My klr weighed about 450 and I rode it on everything from tight single track to highway. I think a sports with lighter forks, a little more plastic body parts, could easily get to the 500lb range. I wouldn't think they could ever compete with the jap dirt bikes, only "adventure" bikes, which are by no means dirt/mx bikes.

That build was amazing. The guy billet machined the swingarm and a bunch of other parts.
Funny that custom chrome barges hard tails and other unridable mobile sculptures are "cool" but something functional is not. He wanted to build it, so he did. No custom bike makes sense.
