anything but stock is tampering with the exhaust system, and technically illegal..a cop told my uncle once on his mustang,if the factory welded a joint, and you just clamp it on a replacement it could be ticketed..just depends how bad they want to harass you..its getting pretty bad lately, they are hurting for money any way they can get it

You gotta follow the EPA guidelines (there are some others, but they are usually not a big deal at all). The biggest one is noise regs. I know around here it is 88dB at 35mph or something like that. Essentially, anything but stock is technically illegal.

Do I care? No. Been running Stage 1 since I bought the bike. Love it that way and will never change it. It does however attract law enforcement at night. Especially if I'm dropping off some ladies in a residential neighborhood.

Define "illegal." The EPA leaves enforcement up to individual states because congress took away their funding for enforcement. You're in Canada, so it depends on what state you are in when you aren't in Canada.

Did you get a ticket? If not, don't worry about it . If you did, consider the quiet baffles. Still gives that same deep sound, but is more likely to keep the cops off your back.

I am considering the quiet baffles myself because I am in Germany right now and they set up checkpoints every now and then. I luckily slipped through one the other day thanks to about 5 other bikes being pulled over already! All of them crotch rockets

Look on the bottom of the pipes or muffler.
Is there an emissions stamp In the metal ?

In the Old days they'd stick a Billy club up the pipes
lookin for a baffle.

No EPA stamp,,possible ticket.

It's mainly an excuse to pull you over to see if you're drunk or have warrants.

Yes, they're illegal. Yes, you'll get hassled for it. No, you generally won't get ticketed for it.

I remember seeing (DEFINATELY on the V&H website) replacement mufflers with the appropriate EPA stamp on them. I wonder if "tampering", while being illegal, would be considered OK if you remained within EPA guidelines. Of course, if a cop wants to, he could make life miserable for you but I have found that as long as you do not act like a total a**hole and treat the officer with due respect, they would be more than likely to leave you alone.
FROM THE V&H WEB SITE -
Vance & Hines exhaust systems for non-catalyst equipped motorcycles as well as slip-fit mufflers that mount downstream of catalysts are considered legal replacement parts in California. California does not, however, permit the use of aftermarket exhaust systems that remove original equipment catalysts unless a California Air Resources Board (CARB) Executive Order has been issued. Although Vance & Hines has applications on file with CARB and has completed durability testing for its catalyst systems, approval has not been granted at this time. Until CARB approval is obtained, exhaust systems that remove original equipment catalysts are legal in California for racing use only.
