Welcome home and thank you for your service. Congrats on the new ride and don't worry about the idiots that call the Sportster a "girls bike" etc...

EVERY single person that I have spoken to that has owned a sporty at some point in thier life, speak fondly of the model.

BTW, welcome to the forum. Lots of good people and lots of good info lingering around here.

First of all, welcome home and thank you for your service to our country

I had my bike for three years as stock and I just started modifying it. Echoing xFreebirdx, the service manual is the best investment you can make if you want to start doing your own work and customizing yourself.

I would recommend that you get a feel for the bike and log lots of miles. Look around this forum, youtube, and the rest of the internet to get an idea of what you are going for. You have to decide if you are going for looks, performance, or comfort. Like DocJ said, $1000 can go a long way or a little.

Remember, it's about you!!! Who cares what others think or say. It's about you!! If you think your Sportster is a girl's bike-- than it is. If you think it's the baddest, meanest, coolest bike in the world-- than it is!

Take your time and enjoy the ride because that's what it is all about. After all, you have EARNED it!!!

The first mod you should do is walk up to any one person who calls a sporty a girl bike and deliver a nice bitch slap to the face.

Thank you for your service, and glad to have you here & back/safe.

My suggestion would be miles......Add lots of miles because by riding, you'll figure out what mods you want to do. You'll also see other sporties and find things about them that you'd like to do to yours. I also say miles because if you're like most people on here, you'll end up modding, change your mind, mod again, and then changing your mind again. It's a vicous cycle I know first hand. My first mod after 5 or 6 years, just after I kicked the wife out, was a 1200+ engine kit, intake, exhaust, and lowering shocks.......Then the GF's started coming & going and the current GF always wants to ride, so on went some throw over saddle bags. So now my choice is going to be a second bike and get the sporty back to a solo ride.....I think.
