Default Engine hiccup/fart, what's wrong?

So several times recently, seeming to be frequent, my engine seems to hiccup/fart for a second. It's happened at idle when I'm warming it up, but it's also happened when warm and running around town. Yesterday it was happening on my way back from the gym enough that I stopped and shut it down for a minute then started it again. It seems that for a split second it loses power, and I've even heard it make a pssst kind of sound when it's happened a couple of times.

What's the problem? Is this what they mean when they say "misfire"? Is it cylinder or plugs or fuel interruption?

usually stock bikes are tuned pretty lean, could be that if you had a carberated bike you'd have to rejet or tune your bike. I dont know that much about EFI bikes. But i had the same thing happen to me (93 Sporty) i just richened the mixture a little bit and no mas

My expert mechanic claims that its because the engine is to lean ... curious what others think though :-).

Plugs don't look lean, maybe a touch if any. But I've had the bike for 2 years and no problems. With SE A/C, stage 1 download and short shots, it shouldn't be lean, should it?

I have the same bike and setup and the same problem. Let me know if you find out what is causing it.

Could have an intake leak. Odds are your still lean. A FI tuner would be best. V&H fuelpak works well with little mods like pipes and a/c. There are many others but more money.

I've had similar problems with my 92 Sportster. Through lots of reading here and other places I pulled the carb and done some checks. I think I may have had a leak coupled with a 42 pilot jet. After stripping and cleaning the carb and making sure everything is back together tight it's now much better. I still need to change the 42 jet for a 45 but eliminating leaks has helped loads.

So although your bike is FI I would begin by looking for leaks and work from there. If it used to be ok and is now playing up with no changes then something has failed. Looking for leaks is free.
