So although your bike is FI I would begin by looking for leaks and work from there. If it used to be ok and is now playing up with no changes then something has failed. Looking for leaks is free.
Sounds like good advice, but I could be staring at a leak and probably wouldn't know it. What could be leaking and where should I be looking? I'm gonna go buy some new plugs and see if the guy can point out what might be leaking. On the phone he said something about spraying the manifold with something and seeing if that caused it to die, but I have no idea what or where he's talking about.

The inlet manifold was where mine was. There's a couple of bolts that hold the manifold to the cylinders and mine wasn't bolted up tightly. I was pulling the carb anyway so checked everything right up to the inlet manifold.

However spraying some carb cleaner around the inlet manifold while the engine is running will make it run faster if there's an airleak as the fluid gets sucked into the bore via the leak and richness the mixture.

Some suggest butane gas but personally I think that's a recipe for a very dangerous disaster. I've had success with easy start (the stuff you use on diesel engines to get them going when they're cold).

Hmmm, I've recently replaced the a/c backplate and the "farting" seems to be worse ... coincidence ... could that cause it?

Have your head bolts checked to ensure that there is a proper seal. I know my hiccups a little it always has. Sort of like it skips a firing cycle once in a while but, I have yet to have it cause any real problems. You may want to look into getting a tuner Fuel pak, power commander, etc... Another thing try running this question by Fuel Moto they're great with EFI tuning they may be able to give you an answer.

Mine did the same thing 02 883 1200 conversion buell heads. SE carb, SE ignition. acted like a air leak. Does it do it at about the same rpm each time? Acceleration or maintaining? Old Gas from the winter? Mine was a simple fix. It did the same sound you are describing. psst pop/poof right?

Check your plugs, I put new ones in and played with the gap .001 incriments till it purrs and runs like a champ. Good luck

After leak checking,,consider these::::

The Factory 14.7 EPA compliant AFR Is very very lean.
This produced white chalky plugs on my stocker.

The X14ieD claims an AFR of 14.0
The XieD claims an AFR of 13.8

I have the X14ieD and my plugs are a nice copper color now.
With This I feel safe adding a Hi flow "Baffled" exhaust and or air filter.

I'm no expert, I just could NOT justify all that money for an ECM and dyno time.
$1,000 for a proper stage one just for a single digit Increase in HP and TQ.
what 6 or 7 at best..No Thanks,
The X14ieD's I Installed really feels good. the Bike Is smoother at all RPM's
My MPG did NOT drop probably because I'm using less throttle due to the
apparent extra power which Is really just smoother power delivery.
The Biggest change on my 08 EFI 1200R was cold start ups.
Before the X14ieD I'd start It,,
get 1400 rpms,,,then 15 to 20 seconds later a single Miss,,
It would almost Kill the engine,,followed buy 30 to 45 seconds of a unsteady Idle
ranging from 1000 to 1400 RPM's.
A steady 1,000 rpm idle would be reached at about 1.5 minutes or even 2 minutes.
After the X14ieD, Imediatly after,,,WOW
Hit the starter,,,rock stable Idle at 1400 rpm's then 20 to 30 seconds later
(45 seconds on chilly mornings) I'd have me a Tach parked on 1,000 RPM's
The needle looked welded to the Tach Face.
That one nasty Miss was all Gone!
I never noticed a "Learning curve",,there may have been one but I was so
overwhelmed by my new smooth power delivery I still say my ECM figgerd
It had died and gone to Harley heavan XD

Clean and re gap the plugs,,file ALL edges sharp and square.
If they need replacement use stock plugs.
Clean the filter,,
Run premium fuel...

Sounds like a common sporty problem. What's the best way to clean a filter?

wifes "08 nightster" does the same thing. when warming up it skips once. i was told that is the EFI switching from a warm up (choke mode) to riding temp fuel mixture. that sounded logical to me. never had other issues, just @ warm up. this could be BS because although i stayed @ a holiday inn express once im not a harley EFI expert!

My 08 1200C Sportster does the same, hiccups once at about a minute into warm up.
I also was told it was switching fuel modes. Never does it after warm up.
And i have never stayed @ a holiday inn express

this problem has gotten much worse. the "psssst" sound is definitely coming from the intake area. the bike frequently dies about 30 seconds after I start it and after it's hiccupped a few times. when I pull away I have to give it more throttle than usual or it' will die. It will continue farting for the first few minutes of riding, then it seems to stop, or at least become much less noticeable.

does this give anyone a better idea since I now know it's coming from the A/C area?
