help, Nightster has second gear shifting problem. need advice
07 nightster, problem is i have trouble shifting into second gear only, all the other gears are fine. ( It feels sloppy like it wants to grind or pop back out ). except when the bike cold it will shift perfect every time, and also will shift perfect into second as long as the rpms dont get too high. Ive tried changing the fluid with harley brand trans oil (non-synthetic). ive also done a clutch cable adjustment to spec and ive also re-adjusted the clutch adjustment screw behind the primary cover to a 1/4 turn out. all that **** and the problem remains the same!!! Im very frustrated, i dont ever drive hard and maintain the bike perfect. the problem has always been there sense new but has gradually gotten worse. Please help!! Is there a better trans fluid that might help? Need recommendations Thanks.

if the problem has been there since new , you should have took the bike back under warranty , sounds like a bit more of a problem than just a clutch adjustment , generally , if you have to baby one particular gear , its the cog itself thats at fault , if this has been reported to the dealers by you in the past , and its on there system , you may be lucky , but i think your going to need a good Indy to sort this out ,

If no warranty...
You could have the trans oil analysed for metal content. That may show which metal is wearing (if any) and lead you to the failing component.
Then you can make the decision to open the gear box.
Also, dare I write Harley gear boxes are no the quietest or smoothest, could someone else ride the bike and confirm the trans is not correct?
Ever bend the gear shift lever rod in a tip over?
Good move to use the OEM oil so the clutch plates are permaented with designated oil.
Yet based on what you have indicated, the trans must be removed and inspected.
