If you stand your bike up while filling it you should get 3.3 gallons in it.
Not if you have fuel injection.

Also, I don't think you'll EVER fill the tank completely, as the filling hole is not at the apex of the tank no matter how you stand the bike. Unless someone lifts your rear wheel up 6 inches or so.

If I know there is is gas stations I ride it till it sputters then switch to reserve and find a station. If back roading I feel up at last gas station on my route then about every 100 miles after that.

Again: this is about a Nightster, there is no reserve.

I think your assumption is just that a assumption at least mine is based on a published spec. So you can prove to me (not think) when they say the capacity of the tank is 3.3 they don't take the factors you stated into consideration? What about fuel expansion due to heat. You could never fill a tank to its max capacity any way without it coming out of the breather vent as soon as the engine heats the bottom of the fuel tank up so you have to build the tank bigger than desired capacity.

Gasoline expands when temperatures rise and contracts when temperatures fall. The standard coefficient of gasoline’s expansion/contraction equals 0.069 % per degree Fahrenheit.

this has been covered before. the capacity stated DOES NOT take into consideration the space taken up by the fuel pump. Can anyone find something to show this to the person above?

They didn't change the size of the tank when they started using fuel injection to accommodate the pump. And the fuel filler opening also is NOT placed at the top of the tank, so you'll never fill it completely. Maybe this IS to account for expansion, but they count the entire volume of the tank, not "usable" volume.

Can someone help me find this somewhere for this person? I'm at work and I can only jump on the net for short periods during breaks.

if you put a custom tank (different shape/size) on your bike would your fuel light still indicate low fuel?
