And the 883 takes just regular unleaded gas where premium is recommended for the 1200s. GA is another state that bases insurance on engine size.

I have an '03 883 with the emphasis on '883', being the size I wanted. For my riding style it suits me perfectly...ie: going to and from work, around town errands, Sunday morning rides with wifey and lower insurance rates. The dealer parts guy said that I can easily gain 10 more hp. with the addition of free flowing exhaust, air intake and re-jet but for me this machine does just fine. The 1200's are fine rides also but the 883 does it all for me.

Iron Legend,

I totally agree with you. The 883, as I said before, can pretty much do it all. It is a GREAT bike!

If, as you note, cost is not a factor, get the Sportster you like and spend your spare change on the options you need and/or want. IMHO, most get the 883 because the initial cost is a little cheaper out the door, it costs less to insure (about 15%--$150 instead of $190 per year), uses regular gas while enjoying the same good looks as the 1200. The 2007 883 enjoys a great torque increase due to the EFI. If you are going to ride with 2 people, go with the 1200. Otherwise, the 883 is a great choice. It has a slightly lower gear ratio than the 1200 for better off-the-line performance. You can go a 1200 upgrade for abut $500 (check out the many previous posts on this subject here and on www.xlforum.net).

Just to let know... I'm from South Africa . Insurance rates are calculated on the driver/ owners age and value of the vehicle (obviously). Thx for the advice.

Hey rharrison.

I will be spending most of my time on the bike with a passenger. Perhaps a 1200 is the way to go then. I am demo'ing both the 883 and the 1200 this weekend.

Actually I think it gets its torque increase from a new cam.

I agree that if you are riding 1 up the 883 is fine but if riding 2 up I think the 1200 would be a better idea.

I've lusted after the 883 for years. I like the extra displacement, but that dingleberry POS horn between the V on the left side of the engine ruins it for me. I'll take the 883.
