Default Screeching clutch

My clutch started slipping alright. Thought it needs adjustment. Took the cover off and realized there still was some [little] slack. In an attempt to better it I removed the infamous sprig plate and replaced it with a friction plate (+ two steel plates of course). The friction plate came from a friend who got it from J&P Cycles.
Now, every time I'm a little more aggressive taking off I hear grinding sound, first time I thought I spun the rear tire. But it appears to come from engine.
Has anybody had similar experience with cheap aftermarket friction plates?
