Default strange leak?

This is going to sound dumb.

I have an 89 sportster 1200 and it seems that primary oil is leaking from the top of the cam cover right next to the front tappet. After riding there is a small puddle of primary oil in that area.

Not sure how this is possible but I have no doubt that it is primary oil and it is not mixed with engine oil.

Are you using different fluids in the engine and primary? Just wondering how you can tell the difference by looking at the fluid...

do you have the sprocket guard off,it could be throwing it up there from the sprocket shaft seal..cant think of any other way, unless you have a hole in the transmission case..how do you know the differance in oils?

Have you changed the breather? ALMOST sounds like the "oil" is coming from the backside of the breather and dripping there (that's where it will normally drip). Do you have any other areas that oil is that it shouldn't be, like on the front of the oil bag" on the rear pipe? If it's from the air filter, you should see spots and runs of oil in those areas too.

Yes i use the hd primary oil and mobile1 engine oil. They are different colors.

Sprocket guard is there. I will give the breather a good look over but I have not seen anything leaking from it yet. No leaks from other places. Is it possible that a seal between the primary to the trans case has gone bad or something?

Thanks for the help guys.

The primary and the trans share the same oil. So no.
Now the seal between the primary and the crank case can fail and oils can mix. Usually when that happens your motor oil fills the primary, the oil tank goes low and the primary ends up over full.

Are you using a stock air filter? Oil will drip from the stock air filter on carb models due to blow-by. The oil mist is to heavy to to be sucked back in the carb and ends up dripping from the filter box and onto engine. I ended up getting this Vance and Hines naked air intake kit for my 2006 sportster. It points the blow-by right back into the carb to get burned up, and the air intake is so much higher I can hear it sucking the air in. No more oil on my engine anymore.
