Question I've chosen my first bike. Opinions?

Hey guys. Iv'e decided that I want my first bike to be either:

883 Low or a Nightster. Used, but new-ish (2007-2009) I don't wanna get a "beater" first.

I've never ridden a bike before, and am doing the MSF course this weekend.

I'm 5'4'' and 140 lbs.

Are these bikes appropriate for someone my height and weight?

I was in the Marines for 8 years, so even though I'm small, I'm pretty strong for my size.

Open to any and all opinions and feedback.

Thanks for the help guys.

You should start a poll. The Nightster would be my pick.

Nighster, dont be afraid of it. Never rode a bike, i bought the gloves, helmet first, then took the MSF and then bought the bike. Started with a 883C and then I got a Street Bob.

I weigh about 160lbs and my Nightster hauls me around pretty quick. Harley's are pretty forgiving. Unlike dirt bikes or sportbikes, the power comes on smoothly on a Harley. You should be fine on either one. The low and Nightster are both lower than the standard Sportster. Really depeneds on whether you prefer chrome or black. I think a 1200 Low is a great looking bike. I still prefer my Nightster. Probably the only advantage to the 1200 is if you plan on riding two people on it or not.

I have to admit, I do prefer the Nightster.

So I guess the questions are:

is the Nightster a good first bike?

and, is it a good fit for someone 5'4'' 140 lbs.?

Depends on what you want a bike to do. Don't expect a canyon carver, or a great long distance tourer (it can be done with modification).

Before you buy one, decide what you really want from a bike, and ride a few. Make sure you're dropping money on something that you really want, not just an image.

After all that, the Nightster may be your perfect bike.

dont buy new, youll kick yourself in the teeth if u drop it. buy an older 1200. I had a 94 sporty 1200 it was way faster than an 883, my buddy had a 2010 883, i think its horrible. the throttle feels like a scooter.

Frst time riders should not buy new. No offense, learn to ride first.

Definetly, but don't zoom in on a bike because it is what I like. My buddy Heath rides a Sportster and is probably only like 5'2". He got a lower seat and has no problem getting his feet down. There are bikes that more comfortable like a Dyna or Softail. I bought a Sportster because they are fun to ride. The Nightster is the first street bike. I've ridden for years on the dirt an on buddies street bikes. It really depende on what you want the bike to do.

I mainly want it for riding around town, and occasionally to work (25 miles one way)

Probably not too much 2 up, at least not at first.
