I have a question to anyone who may have done this before. Me and some guys in my club are planning on doing a trip from Columbia SC to Ft. Worth TX. The trip out will be an iron *** trip, 1000 miles in 24 hours. I have a 1200C with C&C seat and 16" apes. How bad is this going to suck? I rode from here to panama city fl last spring which was 1/3 the distance without any problem so I was wondering what 3x the distance was like for those who have done it.

 

That's insane! Well, its an 8 hour ride nonstop at 74.56mph. So I suppose its do-able...

More like a 14hr non stop ride at 80mph (distance around 1120-1180 miles). That's hardcore

If you do it and save your gas receipts, you can pay some $$ and officially become an Iron Butt Member. You get a pin and a patch (I think). Whoopie!!
I had 2 friends who did an Iron Butt run.
One paid to be recognized, the other just said "I did it".

if you don't have mids, put some on, you'll want to move your feet around, and it helps to stand up every once in awhile to get the feeling back in your butt! Put a bag or something where a passenger would be, so you can lean back and not hang on to those apes all day and night. That's probably the worst part for me is keeping myself upright. Gas stops will help.

 

That ride is quite an undertaking. I rode from mid Michigan to just west of St. Louis, Missouri on my 2007 Sportster custom. That's a little over 750 miles via back roads. I have a Sundowner seat and the trip wasn't bad. It took just under 13 hours with several rest stops along the way. I could easily have done another 300 miles. If your seat is comfortable you shouldn't have any problems.

 

Did a few of these rides. The first time back in 2007 was on my 2005 883C Sportster converted to a 1250. We rode from Portsmouth Va to Savannah Ga and back in 19 hours I believe it was. Even stopped at Cracker Barrel for lunch down in Savannah.
My bike had a windshield on it and a Mustang seat and it was actually pretty easy to be honest.
My bike was using oil at the rate of a quart every 500 miles because of the NHRS 1250 kit so I had 3 quarts of oil along with me on the ride. When I got back I decided the Sportster had to go and traded it in.

Did mine IBA run on an 06 Train with 16 inch apes. I loved it.

Most of it's mental, and making good plans for stops. More stops for shorter time usually means you go faster over the long haul. Never let yourself get too fixated on getting more miles.

I like going more miles inbetween gas stops (we did 175 on the Sporty IBA ride, and about 150 on the other 2 IBA rides I did on the Street Bob) and taking short gas stops. Leaves you plenty of time in case you need it for something.
