I know that several have gone to the 4.5 gal tank off the 1200C. I'm sure there's a thread already. Use the search.

I am about to start hacking up a peanut tank to give more fuel but maintain the same look. It is a common complaint.

Just make sure you get one that is set up for the fuel pump. Anything pre-07 will need major modification.

Thanks for the heads up I am new to this so if the questions sound crazy its because I don't know I am a little confused wouldn't the tank be set up to just be installed on a new bike ? why would the company make tanks not set up for fuel injection or am I missing something ? again thanks for the help

Aftermarket companies make tanks for many years and makes of bike. For the Sportster there was a frame change in '04, and then in '07 they went from being carbureted to fuel injected. So they are going to make different tanks for those different bikes.

Here, maybe this will help:
('07 - up EFI 4.5 gal tank)

Notice the large holes on the bottom of the tank? That's the where the fuel pump attaches.

On carbed sportster tanks they would look more like this:
(pre-07 carbed 3.3gal tank)

The only hole on the bottom is for the fuel petcock. Much smaller. There is no fuel pump, as the gas is gravity fed to the carb.

It would take a lot of effort to make a pre-EFI tank ready to accept the fuel pump.
