I guess it depends on how you feel on the bike and if less wind is worth it. I got hit in the leg with a piece of aluminium siding that flew out of a truck on the freeway last year. A windshield wouldn't of helped me in that situation.
agree with those who posted that they use the removables...
around town i just pull it off and leave it with the bags in the garage. but on the road it is nice to have some protection from things that fly at you and from wind gusts (i still remember a coupla hundred mile ride into the wind before i had the shield- my neck was sore the next day!).
i like the look of my sporty without the shield, but the look with it doesnt really bother me
I sold my HD quick detach shield because it caused horrible helmet buffeting no matter how I adjusted it. I'd rather catch the wind in the chest than get beat to death by the buffeting. Of course, your mileage will vary.
Buying a detachable windshield was one of the best investments for my sportster. It's easy enough to take off for everyday driving, but for the longer trips, it is a must.
2010 1200c: I bought a H_D detachable windshield. I've been riding in 32* temp and the ws is worth every penny in freezing temps. I will remove it when it warms up.
Need? Probably not. Want? Depends on your usage. Any chance a local member can lend you their Quick Detachable? I see a lot in my area around or for sale. It'd always be nice to try and these are so easy to install and remove.
Put 13,000 miles on my sporty last year in weather down to 20 degrees. No windshield. If I want one I will get a RG. I will not argue with the comfort factor but I feel if I want comfort I will get in my car. Just my two cents.
