Default Crusing RPM seems high on '10 Iron...

I have a tachometer installed on my 10 Iron. Beating the interstate for 7 straight hours, I figured the 3800-4000 rpm at 70 or so mph could be toned down a bit. I know on some jap bikes, you can switch out the rear sprocket and belt/chain and this will tone it down for highway speeds.

I am not a speed demon, so getting to speed really fast is of no concern to me. What I would like to do is dial back the 70mph to around 3000 to 3500 rpm. Besides actual engine work, is this possible?

Deleted.

I thought you were talking about a different bike. My apologies.

Really? What should the RPM's be then at that speed. What about idle as a comparison?

An 883 at 71 mph 4000 rpm. A 1200 at 70 mph 3400 rpm. FYI an 883 can run coast to coast and back at 4000 rpm and never miss a beat, don't know about the rider.

Seems bout right to me. I have a tach on my Iron as well. At around 60 mph I'm pushing around 3400 rpm give or take.

Ok, that sounds fine. BUT.....if I wanted to pull it back some, is it possible with a different wheel sprocket (I know I know, it's not called that but it's late and my brain is switching off).

That is normal for an 883. I mean you could sway out the front sporket for one from a 1200, but then your low end is going to suck so around town the bike is going to feel soft. As long as your not holding red line all the time just deal with it.

You can change the front pully to one from a 1200 but then your spedo. will be off. I'm not sure about switching out the tranny gears, might be way to expensive for just a few hundred RPM's. Like said many times above, nature of the beast, she'll run her whole life like that and not whimper one bit.

Like what bwana1 said, 883 engine can run 4000 rpms all day without issues. I would also say not to change front sprocket, gonna loose at lot of power taking off. leave it like it is.

Cool

I don't think the 883 has the power for a gear change,,
Like the others said,,I agree.
A 1200 could take a sprocket change If you didn't mind loosin a bit of Yank..

Found ya the 883 gearing chart,,,
and the 1200,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
