Default Fork Stem Cap Removal

I recently purchased a 1998 Sportster Sport with ~15K miles on it so I wanted to give it a general servicing; oil, grease, etc. So I am trying to remove the triple tree to re-pack the bearings but the fork stem cap will not budge. The cap seems to be pressed on and the service manual seems to assume the same, but could it be secured another way? Is is screwed on?

Thanks, J.J.

I think it is a 36 mm cap....

Motion Pro sells an inexpensive socket for it (3/8" drive)....

Works good as well...

Definitely a MUST Have for the DIY'r....

The stem cap has as stud welded to it and unscrews counter clockwise.

I dont think you need to open the forks to service the triple tree. You can remove the whole thing or just the forks & wheel then the tree. Several ways to do it that don't open the forks.

If you do open the forks, get ready for some fun putting the cap back on

You should get a service manual before proceeding. The Clymer is ok.

To those who posted a reaponse, thanks for the info! The counter-clockwise effort did the trick. I completed the re-packing of the upper & lower bearings and replaced the upper tree. Thanks again, J.J.
