Default Possible electric issues on my 2002 XL1200C

Hey,

Was wondering if the knowledge base had any insight on this. Recently I've run into an issue with my sporty and it won't start. When I turn the key to "On", the lights come on but as soon as I hit the start button it clicks and the lights go off. I moved the wire connecting to the positive terminal on the battery and the lights came back on, but the same thing happened when I tried starting it again. Click and lights go off... motor doesn't turn over or anything.

I didn't think it was a dead battery because of the lights coming on. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

You should check your battery, load test, voltage, etc. The lights do not need the same power that the starter would. You can run lights for a long time after dropping below enough voltage to start. So it could be the battery even if it appears it still "works".

take the battery cables off the battery. Using some emery cloth, clean both cable ends and battery post. reattach the cables to the battery and coat cable ends and battery post with grease. Also check the cable where it attaches to the starter for tightness and corrosion. Check starter mounting bolts for looseness. I had the same problem with my 2003 XLH 1200 and this procedure fixed it. good luck

Thank you for the quick replies. I'll give these things a try when I've got some daylight tomorrow.
