i followed the directions here and used the spectre air filter and it worked great.. for a while
i really like the look of the small air filter and the price can't be beat, but its a bit flimsy
while riding earlier today i felt something hit my calf, i looked down and saw my air filter had fallen off.
heres the pic of it

Mine hasn't broken yet.
Maybe yours was from a bad mold or metal.
Take it back and get a replacement.
But it is good to be aware of.

I've had it on for about 3 months of daily riding.
you have remove the flange which has the support for the bracket so theres not much left holding it on
I'm going to try again but add some support to where it broke

That was one of the reasons I went the route I chose:

It took me a couple years to get around to actually work on this. Ironically, the weekend after I bought my filter and end cap, I saw another member here had gotten the same idea. For that, I need to thank groverhd for putting his thread up here and letting me see the final appearance. See, I was trying to determine if I wanted to vent through breather bolts, an independent filter or directly into the intake like the stock set-up. I decided to go the breather bolt direction.

Time beginning to end, a little less than an hour. Cost, roughly $65.

Following is a complete step-by-step photo process: (apparently, I am limited to 20 pictures, so I had to cut a few out)

Remove two allen-head screws holding the AC cover.

Remove 3 torque screws holding the filter

Carefully remove filter gasket (will be reused)

Remove two breather bolts

Back plate slides straight off

New Filter (Pep Boys/$19) and drain cap (Home Depot/$1.50)

Use gasket as a template for drilling holes in the drain cap. Make sure gasket is facing correctly. The extra hole should be positioned in the upper-right.

The filter can accommodate multiple size mounts: 3”, 3.5” & 4”. There are removable rings on the backside to allow the opening changes. Since the end-cap I used has a 3.5” outside diameter, I needed to remove the center ring from the filter.

Place the end-cap into the filter and trace the edge to get a cut line

End-cap marked and ready to go

Use a 2” hole saw for the center cut-out then drill the mounting holes

After removing all stray pvc splinters, test fit the holes

Small hand saw to cut the cap down to size

Roughed out custom mounting plate

All edges and mounting surface sanded smooth (started with 220 grit, finished with 600)

The original screws are too long for this set-up, so you need three ¼” X ½” long, course thread screws (Home Depot/$2)

Breather Bolts from DK Custom ($38) BTW, ordered LATE Tuesday night … arrived Friday morning. Amazing shipping time. You guys rock! Thanks Kevin!!

Mounting plate and Breather bolts installed

Air filter slips on and is held on by a stainless steel clamp. It extends out the same as the stock ham can but has a smaller overall footprint.

I thought the same thing when I cut mine. So I added some JB weld to reinforce it. What about this braket. It's CNC cut.

Mine did the same thing, so I tried it again and it broke again. I now have a DK Customs 587 filter kit on it.

Mine has not broken off yet w/1K on the filter etc. I did find my leg resting on it and made a mental note not to in case of breakage.

P.S. I have a solid mount '90/not rubber mount engine and it still works. Maybe I got a good one ???

Just a thought,

I love this air cleaner set up.
I was able to get rid of my ugly *** scoop and put on a regular air cleaner.

Ugly *** scoop before.

Nice new Clean looking set up now.
1,000,000,000,000,000 times better looking

Mine broke too after about 1000 miles.

I went to O'Reilys and got another filter kit. I was going to try to reinforce the bracket.

It looks like Mr. Gasket has changed their design. Instead of being a solid piece, the bracket is a 2 piece design.

I found a bracket from Mooneyes and used the filter and face plate from the Mr. Gasket kit. I didn't like the face plate from Mooneye's.

Default Your air cleaner set up

Sir,

I saw your posts about your air cleaner set up. I really like that!! I wanted to ask if that is possible for a 2013 103 engine. Thanks for your time.
