Actually...I make a mount for a different Auto Zone cheapy filter that vents back into the carb.

When you find the 4" filter kit you'll probably also see this one

It's a bit bigger and I didn't like it because it ended up sticking out further than what I wanted at the time.

I used the same carb mount kit and it comes with these pieces that the crank case vent tubes hook to. The "nipple" is just pressed in so I twisted them out with a pair of channel locks.

Just so happens that the hole left over is the perfect size to tap for a 1/8" NPT fitting

The filter clamps on with a built in rubber boot deal so I machined an adapter ring and an internally drilled crank case vent.

Here's the vent ring

and here's the filter adapter ring bolted to the vent ring (the big ugly tubes were just to make sure it was going to work)

I didn't like the look of the filter so I cut a small cover (you can see it in the first pic beside the filter)

Powdercoated it and bolted it to the filter to change the look

I ended up using some 1/8" NPT to 90* PTC and a "T" with 1/4" air brake line for the vent tubes

But like I said...it stuck out too far. Not much further than stock but it was more dramatic because it was smaller and round

And ironically...the last bike I just posted pics of is the same bike I made the 4" filter kit for, for this thread! Lol.

Here is how it was when I got it

Here it is after I messed with it for a while...I mostly pushed it around the garage lol.

the front fender lowered 1"

and how it sits right now.

I sold it. The guy I sold it to had some other bikes and wanted one hardtailed so gave it back to me to do the framework on his other bike...

Anyway, carry on!

Thanks for this thread-- I plan on taking off the SEHB that's currently on my bike and going with the cheapie filter approach. I was in Autozone today picking up some stuff for my truck and found one of these cheapie filter kits on a shelf for $12 so I picked it up. They had one replacement paper filter left on a hangar for $6 so I picked that up too.

Great idea! I got one from Advance Auto in Alachua last night. Just gotta get the bracket and hoses and such. Been looking at the Joker set-up, just no way I could bring myself to pay that much for it. I love my old levi's, but I gotta go with the K&N filter over that paper one since I live down some dusty dirt roads. I'd be changing that filter every week! Now, and you should've known it was coming, the question! Putting this on an 07 883L with EFI. This was asked before in this thread, just wasn't really answered. Will this do anything as far as performance? (horsepower, torque, etc..)Thanks for sharing this, mreed. Seems like too many companies are trying to rip us off for some really simple yet cool designs. I wish I had more to contribute as far as customs go, but without people like you and others on here, we'd be going broke while making them rich for custom pieces. Soon as I figure out why mines running so rough right now, definately gonna start on the air cleaner.

Right on guys! Let's see some pics when you get em done!

I don't know the flow rate but I would say it's comparable to any other high flow air intake available. No reason why it shouldn't be.

I'm working on a simple crank case vent set up now. I think it'll be cool.

Thanks alot for posting this. I'm definitley going to try it...like most others.
I also want to get the ViED to go along with this.
In your expert opinion should I skip the ViED and go with a PC5 or something else??
I'm getting kinda confused.
Thanks

This is up to you. I think the ViED idea is cool but have never done it. I only have one EFI Sportster and got a free download when I bought it. I've been really happt with it.

First off, thanks for this idea. Now, I have the support bracket kit from Jireh(P/N 39-440). When mounting up the bracket I have found a problem. All the mounting holes line up, but the bracket is about 1/8" spaced off the carb when it is flush mounted to the crankacase breather holes. I don't want to try and force it and risk stripping out the threads on the carb. I am thinking maybe the bracket was bent up wrong. I called Jireh and they don't have any tech support so they pretty much told me that they didn't know. They did tell me that they would swap it out if I wanted. Before I do that though, I wanted to check with yall and see if maybe I was missing something. I have pictures but I can't post them up yet. I would be happy to send them to someone if they would post them for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, where did you get the allen head bolts to mount up the air cleaner. The factory ones are too long and the threads don't go up far enough.
Thanks
Robbie
