You're at $130 if you were to do the home made kit with the same components and you've got to put in atleast an hour of elbow grease. You spent an extra $50 bucks for a reputable air cleaner kit that took minutes to install.
I disagree, I live in Canada and I bought two complete spectre filters and assemblies for $52 including shipping from the USA. Breather bolts $54 shipped.

That's $106 including a spare filter and filter assembly for later on, or in case I messed it up. Plus to me, half the fun of owning a bike is little projects like this. It makes my friday night to sit down and tinker on something. By the way people seem to think the carb mount bracket is necessary but it's not. I did it on my EFI nightster without the extra bracket and the seal is still good around the throttle body. Hope that helps.

Well have decided to go with the k&n 3130 filter after what Dan said. Bit bigger than what I wanted, just hope it does the job...

how is your filter mounted then? Care to post a pic or two? I just purchased a bracket from DK but I'd like to see what you've come up with.

same as "MREED" I take zero credit for this. Cut off the flange, (not shown) File carefully and try fitting multiple times, (handy to use a pencil to mark where the bolts go)

For my perticular bike all the bolts were fine except the one circled here needed to be chopped to fasten down tight.

I then added washers underneath the bolts and notched out the rubber of the filter so it sits flush in the assembly.

Figure out what breather bolt set up you like. And the last thing you need is to find a lower profile bolt shown here.. from the good ol' hardware store, because the original one will not allow the assembly to sit flush.

Ah well could be worse right. I will say one thing , the breather bolts are spewing a verrry small bit of oil but hey ive read that everywhere too, kinda have to deal with it.

Plumb it to the ground for complete satisfaction. Use 3/8 chrome or flat black copper tubing all the way to rear wheel and 1/2 inch copper gaskets (6) on breather bolts and bracket. I tried several setups but this worked.

Thats awesome, can you show a pic and what the set up includes for materials? Does make more sense. I like my set up but the oil is kinda ghetto for this day and age haha.
