Excellent process and documentation. Looks like you have the skills to take on even more challenging problems that few would attempt to solve. Good job.

(Newbie, my first post)
Looks great! I want to do this on my 2000 XLH883 sportster. What year sportster is in the photos?
Also, will I need to rejet carb after this change?

Thank you. I've done these filters for all years of HD's. Any Evo Sportster or big twin with a CV carb or EFI is the same.

You will probably have to rejet since you are introducing more air but the best way to know for sure is to run it for a few miles and check your plugs. If they're white you will need to rejet.

Unhappy Not on my efi

I tried this set up on my 2011 custom, but as soon as I did it I took a little ride and noticed that I did'nt have quite the power as before. I got home and noticed at idle that my engine was knocking like it had no oil in it, so I turned the bike off and went to check the oil and my oil tank was presurized like a gas can. Latter that evening I noticed oil all down the left side of my bike, seemed to becoming from the top side of my oil tank. When I did this mod I changed the bolts that the breather bracket bolts to with standard bolts (unlike the stock ones with the holes running through them) I assume this is the problem since I went back to the stock set up and everything is fine now. Any suggestions?

Man...yeah. That was your mistake. Didn't you question the holes in those bolts at any point? Or read this thread?

Everyone makes mistakes but yours was pretty silly...especially since there is a lot of information in this thread.

Yeah you don't typically see breather bolts, so if you had no idea what they were for, you really should have looked into it. I mean, if I saw something I didn't recognize I would probably look into it.

Is the K&N E-3120 filter actually the exact same size as the paper specter one? I noticed Summit lists it as being 3.875 OD. Summit lists a 4in OD K&N but its 2.75in tall, p/n: E-4310

The E-4310 will probably fit. The paper elements aren't exact in measurement. Some are 4" and some are a bit smaller.

The center threaded stud may be too short but you could just use a longer 1/4-20 bolt and some jam nuts.

Nice write up and sweet bikes...I was going to save up for a stage I, but since I'm not too concerned with making the most power possible this looks like the ticket!
