Thanks! Right now I'm working on a front floor board "how-to" and an inexpensive springer mod for the 04 & up frames. Both are a tad more technical than this filter deal though.

Find one that has a natural aluminum backing plate. They're stronger. The attachment for the bridge deal is well in to the front side not the back. You'd basically have to grind it down to paper thin to damage it. And as far as tightening the cover, I've found that threading a 1/4-20 nut down the stud before the cover is installed it'll act like a jam nut and keep all of the torque right there instead of on that bridge.

just to kind of confirm my thoughts is on my 77 xlt, I wouldn't need to worry about the breather on top as mine is down below by the generator "foo-foo valve" http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/s...=1960632....so I could fab up a different mounting bracket? (without all that "breather" stuff up top like all of you guys are running

Correct??

Do you have a CV carb? I just put a CV on an ironhead...I didn't use any carb mount bracket. It works fine but I'm still contemplating on calling the guy & telling him it needs one.

But to do this filter deal on yours without the same carb bracket you'll need to space the air cleaner backing plate away from the carb 1/8" or it won't fit because of the carb top cover. I just used a washer and drilled the necessary holes.

Just out of curiosity, how often do you replace the air filter with this setup? I had mine of for about 5000 miles and it was looking pretty grungy so replaced it with a new one.

Any suggestions?

I did the same thing while replacing the air filter and had to go purchase another unit...good thing they're cheap. One modification I made this time was to add some nuts and washers inside the cover so that you can't over tighten as the cover will have some backing when it gets tightened.

I had an A/C fly off on the highway once (not this one...an aftermarket setup) so I'm always using loctite and trying to get things tightened as possible.

Oh sorry. One of the more popular upgrades to an Ironhead is a CV carb because of the accelerator pump. Post a pic of yours without an air cleaner & I'll tell you if it'll work.

Has anyone tried this chrome AC from Mooneyes? It's only $12 and doesn't need any mods. I just wonder if it would allow enough air in?

Those are the chincy ones that break real easy and I believe you have to buy their adapter plate?

Mike, I noticed the filter partially covers the small hole that is left open going into the carb face. Does this matter or should we notch the filter so it is totally open? Thanks.

It's not necessary. That hole is your float bowl vent. It doesn't need much.
