The EFI tachs use the serial data wire from the ECM for RPM value. The carbed bikes use a standard type tach similar to ones used from way back that had a Signal wire that hooked up to the coil, they are not interchangeable. You could hook the older style tach to the coil, but since they are two completely different types of ignition systems, the tach will not be acurate.
If you want a stock tach, you need to get one from an 07 and up R model, use the setup from the XR or go with an aftermarket one designed for those years.

The 2004 and up Sporties all use the same tachs. The 04-06 carbed Sporty tachs are fed via the serial data bus just like the EFI Sporty.

Hi guy's.

Well it got the better of me. So I braved the hot shed this arvo & dismantled my bike again.
Inspecting every connector I disconnected during my past workmanship.
I found it. 1 of the pins had slid down the tinniest bit, obviously not making connact, when the 2 plugs were connected.

I am only going by the 2011 HD bible for the tacho. Lists 69829-06 to suit 07 onwards XL Custom.
As mentioned in past conversation. Everything was working fine but I could not pulse between odometer & time.
But I am not convinced it is acurate till Il get the dealer to compare rpm readings when the stage 1 tune done.

Thanks for all your input, cheers Mal.

Sounds like you got it figured out. Those connectors can be a pain sometimes. Hopefully the misinformation I gave didn't cause any confusion along the way.
