Exclamation What do? Repairs over a year late!!

Summer 09' I bought an 82 Sportster XLH 1000. On the road for a couple weeks and the clutch slips. From what I've been told it caused a catastrophe; threw a rod, wrecked the jug, etc. I lost nearly all compression and a whole lot of white smoke and oil were coming out the pipes.

Took the bike in for repairs. Its been a year and a half. Finally done. Says its gonna be $1,000.

What do you guys say about the situation? Did I get a deal despite the time?

Timeline is terrible. What was done to the bike? A grand isn"t much to throw @ an iron barrel. They are tough to work on and not many old school mechanics left. What does the repair order show being done to the bike? I can't imagine it threw a rod and the bill was less than 3k. Just sayin'.

Does not sound right at all.
Surely the clutch slipping has nothing to do with any broken rods....

If you don't do the work yourself, who knows what was wrong, or how well its fixed.
$1000.00 seems to be chump change for having your motor worked on.
At least is is when you pay someone to do it.

Sort of what I was thinking, unless the OP just revved the poo out of the bike when the clutch let go.

Default yup

yeah. thats what OP did. but it didn't take much. i was riding down the highway when the clutch slipped. once it happened the tac went into the red. total jackass move, i know.

sounds like the price is good though. i probably wont get an a detailed receipt, but i do know that the mechanic replaced the clutch, installed a new jug and piston and had to have machine work done.

I know its worth more than $1,000, I just know the timeline is messed up. At this point, if the work is done well, I'm ready to just let it go instead of pursuing some kind of legal action in opposition to pay like some people have recommended.

Thanks

the clutch slipping wont let it redline long enough to blow an engine, unless you hold it there for an extended time..it would almost have to be intentional unless it was already knocking and you just didnt notice..$1000 is a good price for an engine rebuild,if it thru a rod, it needed tore down completely to the engine cases and flywheels split..as far as the time line, what did you do in the mean time..i would of been calling daily after two weeks, did they have an excuse?or did you just let then take as long as they wanted..it could of sat for most of that time waiting on a reply from you..

How the heck could you do without your bike for 18 months? Hopefully you have another.

As far as the rest goes - the bill is not in line with the stated repairs. Maybe they're giving you a break over the timeline? 18 months? Should have been about 3 weeks.

The time line sucked big time. But how is it running?

$1,000 is nothing...be happy. 10k service at a dealer and a new tire costs that much. your fault for letting it take so long.

Part of me says you should be pissed it took so long...the other part of me says you should be happy it only cost you $1000 if it was as bad as you say.
