Angry Check Engine Light will not go off

Ok, so I get on the bike this morning to head to work. Crank it up and let it warm up for a few minutes. Right before I take off, Check engine light comes on and stays on. It's done it once before so I go on my merry way. I get about a mile down the road and the thing still is on. So I decide to turn around and take it back home and get my cager. Haven't had a single problem from it since the day it was purchased. What could be the issue here? Running just fine. Could it be the battery? How does one go about checking what the problem is without taking it to the stealership? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Start by checking the speedo for codes.

There is a "Sticky" at the top of this section on how to read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

Thanks guys. Appreciate it. Printed out a copy of the DTC sticky. Hope this will help me diagnose the problem.

Default I'm a MORON

Ok, I'm a moron! Plain and simple. I go home during my lunch hour and check the bike out. Daylight so I can see everything. This morning when I tried it, it was 5:30 and dark out. So.. With that being said, I get home at lunch and check the bike over. Find a wire hanging loose on the left side by the oil filter. Loose connection. Reconnect it, start it up, BING BANG BOOM.. Check engine light goes off. DUH!!!

Toldja I was a newbie. LOL. At least it was something very simple and something that didn't cost anything to fix.

Glad it was an easy fix because chasing down some of those eletrical gremlins can be a real SOB.

I would check any check engine light when it first comes on. Usually that is the ECM codes I see on my cars I check what it is whether it goes out or not. I don't know about HD codes but most ECMs have a history code you can check.
