Sportster tranny noise?

Sportster tranny noise?
Hey guys...This bike is a 1994 1200 with near 70,000 kms(about 40,000 miles) on it.
I got it from an older woman(71 now) who owned it since new so I'm assuming it never had the dogsnot rode out of it. I'm betting she may have lugged it quite a bit but don't know.
I've replaced/rebuilt a lot of stuff that was in need.
The last thing is the ugly noise coming from the tranny or something on the primary side.
It sounds almost like a bucket of scared chickens or something.
Not bad when cold but gets worse as it warms up.
New drive belt, primary chain adjusted to spec...doesn't change a thing.
It's really bad if the motor is lugging a bit 2200 to 2500 rpm (trying to sneak loud pipes around town) and carries on til about 2900 rpm.
The noise goes away after that ...or seems to. I'm pretty hard of hearing so the engine noise may be hiding the noise.
I've put about 5000 kms on it and the noise doesn't seem to get any worse but it is loud!
I've had people ask me what that funny noise was after I went by them.
What to replace next?
Primary chain/sprockets?
Is there a bearing or bushing that may need replacing after that many miles?
Thanks for your time!
Russ
