Default Is the Sportster the number one selling bike in America?

Thought I heard that one time. Why don't you see more of them? Maybe it isn't true anymore. They seem kinda rare to me as I don't know anyone else locally that owns one. Whenever i go to the dealer I see lots of big bikes and not too many Sportys. Also, if you look at the forums here, ours is the least active besides the v-rod forum. What gives?

The Fat Boy is the best selling HD. I'd be willing to bet the best selling bike in America is a metric, like a GSXR 600 or a Ninja of some kind.

I would have to agree about questioning if they are the bigest seller. I live in CT and I don't see many Sportsters compared to other Harleys. I have ridden a Sportster for many years and used to see so many more. Now even the women I see are riding Dynas and Softails. I just sold my sporty and am probably going to go with an 07 Dyna model. I hope I don't regret it. The Sportster is such a great all round bike.

I think alot of Sportsters go to first time buyers who for some reason (fear, dedication, etc) never ride them. I have a neighbor whose had a Sportster the 5 years he's lived near us and I've seen him on his bike twice.

I think you may be right.

A guy at work here says his son has one that he never rides. I think several guys get them "for their wife" who finds she doesn't really like to ride that much.

I still wonder what the most popular bike in North America is. I bet the Sportster is pretty high up on the list.

I think you are correct. There are a ton of harley owners that buy the bike, customize it and then never ride it. I dont get it. Seems like a waste. This the the reason I buy all of my bikes, and every future bike used. There are a ton of bikes with 500-1000 miles on them for sale on ebay. Let some other sucker pay the destination fee and dealer processing. I found I can save 15-25% on a bike with a few hundred miles on it.

Yeah, that's my story. I found an 05 1200 C with 1300 miles. (This was back in May). With all the bling on the bike I figure the original owner lost between 4 and 5,000.00. The bike was and is perfect. What could be nicer!!!!!!!!

My next one is going to be a Black Street Glide. I am going to wait until winter to find a person that cant afford a $19,000 bike payment in the winter and "take" the bike of his hands.....as a favor of course!

I went on a benefit ride two weeks ago, must have been 250 bikes with 240 of them HD, mine was the only Sporty that I saw.
