Good first harley/project bike?

I would ask to see receipts to see what 'recently rebuilt' means and check the compression and keep in mind you may be doing motor or drivetrain soon...'cause you just never know.
I've ridden mine into the oceans on both sides of us. Do maintenance through the winter and minor adjustments through the summer. I keep on top of it and it hasn't failed me.
It rides like a 50yr old bike...kicks back once in a while...but...you can measure the man by the stallion he's tamed.
Taming a Stallion is fun...riding them gives great pleasure.
Old Iron is the way to go...

Thought this at one time. I mean if I get a well taken care of iron head like this near me :

How do the iron heads ride?

I like Scotts comment also about a 35 year old bike that starts on the first kick. I love it!! I give her two shots of gas with the throttle, put the choke on, kick it through 3 times with ignition off to prime the cylinders. Open the choke, turn on the ignition and she roars to life on the first kick.
That's of course after a good inspection and tune-up.
I do like having the best of both worlds, nice to have options for riding.

Wel my penny pinching/saving starts now and I will get some income tax return so in time I will be there probably first half of next year. I see the ironheads appeal and the evos appeal. I may just weigh each while I save and go from there. I do think a 1000cc ironhead or 1200cc evo would be what I like. I think the ironhead would be cool but would be a challenge to find an engine that hasn't been beaten to **** or whatnot.

Yeah I think I should I should get an evo engine. I want reliability. What are opinions about 883 vs 1200? I want to get a 1200 and know the 883 can upgraded to 1200 but want to get "all I need in the first shot". I currently ride a 600cc and know the 883 will be powerful with screaming eagle and such but is there really enough jump in the 1200 to do that? Should I start at 883? Thanks for suggestions.

I would start by lubing the shaft at the case and if that doesn't do it then you might be looking at a bent shifter arm or worn shifter cam or pawl carrier springs in the gear box.
