Default Style Question

Hi all. Just joined
Being an 'engineering ignoramus' and am 'sniffing' around a Harley for next spring. I'm in Blighty btw and like the 48 style but not the little tank (surely must get annoying) but also like the higher seat height of the Nightster, but prefer the 48 front wheel/tyre. Have been reading the thread about 48 tank size and some owners swapping for a nightster tank.

So question 1. Is that 3.3 or 4.5 US (?) gallons.

Question 2. Is it not possible to fit a 48 front wheel and tyre to a Nightster. Is it handling issues or cost ...or what?

Thanks.
We got a big bike show coming up here next weekend so hoping to go along to see the Harley stand.

Welcome to the forum. I was thinking of doing this on my fiancee's Nightster... really the only thing I can see needed would be the triple trees, wheel and tire, and axle. Could be wrong though. Unfortunately these parts were not available from H-D when I was looking into the job, maybe in a year or two they will offer a wide front end kit.

Yes, it can be done, quite easily. My dealer said it would be about $1,700 US. The Nightster is 3.3 gal US, the 48 is 2.2 gal US, the custom and low are 4.5 gal US.

Get a 48 and put a nightster tank and seat on it. That would be much cheaper than getting a nightster and converting it to a mid/wide glide and getting wheel/tire. IMO

That's a great big maybe. It depends on how true to you want to be, and to which model. It is far less expensive for me to convert my Nightster to a 48 than the other way around, as I wanted mid-controls, and am willing/able to paint my own motor.

That's true but the OP didn't say anything about paint, controls, etc. Just stated the front end, tank and seat

Thank you for your comments chaps. Lots more thought to think. Anything possible then. I'm guessing no real geometry/handling issues. It's all about money. Just need to decide wot I want..!!

That is why we chose a Nightster over the '48. The cost of a used Nightster is quite a bit less around here, IF you can even find a used 48. Geometry will not be an issue, as long as you do it right.

Considering that the only real differences are cosmetic, anything is possible. Same frame, same geometry. Seat heights are only different due to the different seats.
