I picked up my Iron yesterday. Dealership folks said that the 1k milage service was required to keep the warranty. They said to bring it in anywhere between 750 and 1200 miles.

They also said that the 5k and following services were not required to be done by a HD shop to keep the warranty.

Right or wrong, that is what they said.

The first oil change is pretty important. When the motor is new and breaking-in it will generate a substantial amount of metal particles. These are floating around in the oil. Personally I wouldn't do the trip until you change the oil. I did my first oil change at 500 miles and did another at 1500 miles. All three holes.

I changed my oil @100 miles, (probably should have done it 50) and there was break in stuff in it "gold sparkly stuff" and "black chunkier stuff" that you could visibly see in the sunlight. Changed it again at 500, 1000 and again to syn @2000. Changed out the tranny fluid @500 to syn and the primary at 800 to syn and then back to HD Formula + @2K. That's mainly what you're payin' for is the fluids and the labor w/the 1 K service. The rest of the stuff you can pretty much do with a manual.. If you want to be on the safe side, just document when and what you did, that will suffice.
